Why Tiers Beat Rankings at Every 2026 Draft

A ranking is a straight line. It implies the gap between the 6th running back and the 7th is the same as the gap between the 18th and the 19th. It never is. Tiers exist to draw the cliffs — the places where the position quietly falls off — so you know when to reach and when you can wait a round.

How to build a tier board

Start from consensus order, then insert a break wherever the projected weekly output drops more than it did between the two names above it. You are not looking for the best player. You are looking for the last player in a group who still does the same job as the first.

On draft day this changes one decision constantly: when the tier you are eyeing has four names left and the tier below has one, you can spend your pick elsewhere and circle back. When it has one name left, you take him now.
